ICH WILL - the podcast of the Medienwerkstatt (episode 6): Women* and Martial arts

Our in-house podcast is back in the ring, literally, because in the current episode of ICH WILL we are guests at the martial arts school Grapple & Strike, where we talk to kick and Thai boxing trainer Kathrin about women* in martial arts, competitions and feminist self-defence. We learn more about Kathrin’s time in Mexico, where she trained the self-defence project Commando Colibri, among others. We also talk about why it is important to understand self-defence not only as a right, but also as a duty: Because those who defend themselves against discrimination and violence protect other vulnerable groups at the same time.

ICH WILL - the podcast of the Medienwerkstatt (episode 5) Women* and Football

In this episode it’s about women in football and we talk to Sarah, former second division footballer.

Sexism, lack of media visibility and a huge gender pay gap - there are many reasons why (professional) football is not attractive for women. And yet they do exist: Female footballers who are not deterred by this and conquer the pitch with great enthusiasm. Sarah is one such player. She played in the second Bundesliga and in this podcast episode she talks about clichés and the lack of role models, but also about her fascination for football.

ICH WILL- the podcast of the Medienwerkstatt (episode 4) Women* and music

The girls’ music workshop at the Schlachthof Cultural Centre encourages girls and young women to be loud, learn instruments, find their own voice and make themselves heard.

Sexist assumptions such as “women can’t play loud instruments” have no place in the weekly meetings. The girls are offered a safe space in which they can try out their ideas, instruments and lyrics. The podcast ICH WILL visited the young musicians, their leader Meike Schaub and her band colleague Susanna Janke and is certain that the young band members are already enriching the music scene with their presence.

ICH WILL - the podcast of the Medienwerkstatt (episode 3) Women* in the Punk scene

Promoters who bring almost exclusively male musicians on stage and women* who report assaultive behaviour at concerts: The punk scene is repeatedly accused of being a place that repeats and reinforces sexist patterns. We talk about this topic with Roberta in this episode of ICH WILL. She has been playing in punk bands for seventeen years and has a lot to say about what should change within the punk scene.

By the way, the two great songs we play in this podcast episode are from Roberta’s band Postford.
